Backyard Plans

Raised garden bed plans with the soil worked out

Every bed is at most 4 ft wide so you reach the middle from both sides, holds at least 10 in of soil, and gets a wall support at most every 4 ft. The plan tells you how much soil to buy, in cubic feet, cubic yards and bags, and prices it on the shopping list.

Raised bed questions

How wide should a raised bed be?

At most 4 ft, so you reach the middle from both sides without stepping on the soil (UGA Extension).

How deep should a raised bed be?

Most crops need at least 10 in of soil; our 11 in bed holds 10 in. Root crops and potatoes do better in the 16.5 in bed.

How much soil does a 4x8 raised bed need?

Our 4x8 ft bed holds 23.9 cu ft (0.9 cu yd) at 11 in tall: 16 bags of 1.5 cu ft. At 22 in it holds 50.2 cu ft.

Is pressure-treated wood safe for a vegetable bed?

New copper-treated ground-contact lumber is: an Oregon State study found copper moved only about 1 in into the soil and none into the produce. Avoid railroad ties and lumber treated before 2004, or choose cedar (our Durable group).
