Backyard Plans

Chicken run plans sized for your flock

A run gives your hens safe daytime space. Every plan gives each hen at least 10 sq ft inside the wire, covers every side and the top with 1/2 in hardware cloth, and lays a 24 in apron against diggers. One run is up to 12 hens (120 sq ft); the low movable run is for up to 6.

Chicken run questions

How big should a chicken run be?

We plan 10 sq ft of run per hen, the top of the 8 to 10 sq ft range extension guides give. Six hens get a 6' x 10' run (60 sq ft).

What wire should a chicken run use?

1/2 in hardware cloth on every side and the top. Chicken wire keeps hens in but does not keep raccoons out.

Do I need an apron around the run?

Yes for a fixed run: our plans lay a 24 in hardware cloth apron flat on the ground around the outside so diggers hit wire. The low movable run has none because it is moved.

Can the run attach to my coop?

Yes. Choose the run for your existing coop and give us the pop door width and the height of its top: the run frames an opening around it.
